NSF Reminds FastLane Users to Follow Proposal Guidelines

In a recent Biology (BIO Directorate) competition, NSF had to return several
applications to institutions due to non-compliance with FastLane proposal
submission guidelines. Specific FastLane requirements, as well as general
proposal requirements, are described in the NSF Grant Proposal Guide (GPG)
at http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2000/nsf002/contents.htm, and on various
directorate and program web pages.

Following are important points to note:

1. Applications sent to BIO after May 2, 1999, require at least partial
electronic submission (proposal cover page, project summary, and the BIO
proposal classification form) via FastLane. Full FastLane submission is
encouraged. For instructions on how to prepare a proposal for the BIO
Directorate, please visit the following website:
http://www.fldemo.nsf.gov/a1/BioInstr.htm.

2.	General proposal preparation instructions in the GPG apply to
FastLane proposals unless specified otherwise in the program announcement:
*	Project Summary - one page only.
*	Project Description - No more than 15 pages (including figures).
If the PI has received a grant within the last 5 years, the project
description must include a section on results from prior NSF support.
*	At least one-inch margins (top, bottom, left, and right).
*	Type and spacing may be no smaller than 15 char/inch (about type
size 11, but please be cautious since this varies with different fonts) and
6 lines/inch.
*	No unallowable appendices.
*	References - Must include article titles.
*	Biographical Sketches - Two-page maximum. Must include a list of
names for the PI's advisor(s), collaborators (from the past 48 months), and
advisees (postdoctoral or graduate students). NEW: Include a section on
Synergistic Activities (see GPG for explanation). No more than 10
publications may be listed in the biographical sketch.
*	Current and Pending Support - Include this information for each PI.

Please remember that as of October 1, 2000, ALL proposals must be submitted
via FastLane. Call ORSA at 6-5131 with questions or problems in preparing
standard or FastLane proposals.
