NSF FASTLANE IS NOW CONVERTING TO A PASSWORD SYSTEM:

The National Science Foundation's web-based proposal and award management
system, FastLane, was initially designed for access with a user's PIN, which
was assigned and managed by the institutional sponsored programs office (at
the UO, that office is ORSA). Due to increased pressure for additional
system security, NSF has decided to change the log-in system from a PIN
assigned by the central office to a Password selected by the individual
user. The following NSF announcement partially explains the transition:

FastLane is changing to use Passwords instead of the present four character
PINs. You will notice that the word "PASSWORD" replaces the word "PIN" on
the login screens for Principal Investigator and Organizational Management
functions. You may continue to use your PIN. However, during May and June,
users when logging into these functions with their PINs will gradually be
asked to choose a Password to be used during all subsequent logins. The
transitions to passwords will start with a small group of organizations and
then apply to all organizations registered with FastLane. Transitions for
users will be based on the first letter of their last name (from A through
Z). If you have any questions about the new password, please see FastLane
document PIN-to-PASSWORDS Q&A.

UO users of NSF FastLane should continue to use their assigned PIN or call
ORSA if you need a new user set-up and PIN. Once the implementation to
Passwords is in place, you will see a message to change to a self-assigned
password the next time you log into FastLane. Password characteristics
include: 6-20 characters, contains at least one alpha and one numeric, not
case sensitive, ability for user to change own password, expiration of
password at regular intervals (currently 1 year), and inability to use same
password until 3 changes occur.

Once a user chooses a password, ORSA will no longer know the individual's
log-in password. However, if the password is forgotten, the user can
contact ORSA for a temporary password, log in, and then change to a
permanent password. As we receive more information on this change, we will
keep you posted. Call ORSA at 6-5131 with any questions or problems related
to FastLane.
