Consultants
Consultants provide a specialized service or expertise not available from current institutional resources. UO faculty, students, and staff are not considered consultants for the purposes of grant budgeting and should be paid through regular payroll structures. Consultants' names and organizational affiliations should be provided and their need by the project fully justified. Consultants may be paid at a reasonable and usual rate for the services provided. The National Science Foundation limits consultant fees to the daily equivalent of the maximum rate paid a U.S. government Executive Schedule Level IV employee. The rate effective Jan.1, 2005 was $527/day excluding expenses. The current rate is found at www.nsf.gov/bfa/dias/policy/index.jsp or in the NSF Grant General Conditions GC-1. Travel costs and per diem allowances for consultants should be listed separately under the travel category.
